A nearly 9 million € investment propels the SAMI Valga production into a new growth phase

SAMI Tootmine carried out an extensive modernisation project, investing nearly 9 million € in the renovation and expansion of its Valga factory. One of the central elements of this investment was a new automatic powder coating line designed and installed by Elister, which played a key role in optimising the factory’s production processes and increasing overall productivity.

Major investment and production restructuring

The production units were previously located in Saue, Otepää, and Valga, but in order to improve production efficiency, a decision was made to close the Otepää plant and consolidate production in the city of Valga. This made it possible to invest in the expansion of the Valga factory and the implementation of modern technological solutions, including a new coating line.

The project involved 4,000 m² of new construction and an equally large area of renovated facilities, enabling the integration of production solutions using the latest technologies.

Coating line – a production bottleneck resolved

The previous paint line was a production “bottleneck”, as it did not allow for the coating of large-scale products, thereby limiting production capacity and efficiency.

The newly installed automatic powder coating line eliminated this obstacle by enabling:

  • Pre-treatment and coating of large and complex products

  • Optimisation of the production process and increased efficiency

  • More resource-efficient and environmentally friendly production

Why a powder coating line?

The choice of the coating line was a crucial part of the project. Compared to traditional wet painting, powder coating offers several advantages:

  • Higher quality results – a stronger and more durable surface finish

  • Environmental friendliness – no solvent fumes or hazardous compounds are released

  • More cost-efficient process – powder coating material is recyclable

The decision was also driven by customer demand, as many clients, particularly in Finland, prefer powder-coated products.

Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency

The system developed by Elister OÜ not only improves production efficiency but also reduces environmental impact. A key element of the system is heat recovery: residual heat from the coating line’s oven is not wasted but is instead used to heat the production building and welding halls.

System benefits:

  • Significant energy savings – 35–40 MW of heat has been recovered within just a few months

  • Cleaner production – clean air in the production area is ensured through effective ventilation and the elimination of solvents

  • More efficient use of coating material – oversprayed powder coating is recirculated until reuse; only agglomerated powder is discarded
